Camera Club Picnic
At
The
Great Lakes Marine & Coast Guard Memorial Museum
aka:
Ashtabula Marine Museum
JULY
29, FRIDAY, 6:30PM
POTLUCK PICNIC is at the Marine Museum, 1071
Walnut Blvd., Ashtabula, OH 44004 (440-964-6847) overlooking the Ashtabula River
in Ashtabula Harbor. Bring a dish to share and your own table service. The
museum will provide a grill (for your own meat/veggies), coffee, and water. Our
club will provide pop (Pepsi, diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist) and salad dressings. We
will be able to eat inside the museum or outside on picnic tables. This will be
a rain or shine outing as there are plenty of things to see inside the museum.
We will be given tours of the museum. The
views from the museum and back yard are great: harbor, coal conveyers, lift
bridge, Coast Guard building, ore boats and other river traffic, Point Park's
model of a Hewlett, etc.
There will be a special discount rate for
our group, $3.00 per adult admission. Children will be free. (Usual rate is
$4/adult and $3/kids 6-16.) Club members are encouraged to offer some of their
best shots to the museum for possible use in promotion, exhibits, etc. There are
several special limited-run exhibits that will be on display in the museum:
Structural steel and pictures from N.Y. City Twin Towers from 9/11 from the
Brian Morgan collection; "Life of Lake Erie" Photo Contest Display
sponsored by the Ohio Lake Erie Commission, the 12 winning photos including GCC
member, Dee Riley's, The Dorothea M. Geary restoration (the first welded steel
service boat) "in the world" comes home to Ashtabula where she was
built; other special exhibits from the museum's collection.
Park tightly in the museum parking lot or
on the street, carpooling is encouraged. (Leave the spaces at Point Park across
the street for visitors to the Park.) Don't forget your tripod, there could be a
great sunset, and after dark there's the lighted Bascule lift bridge. Come
early, swimming is free down the street at Walnut Beach (also the best spot to
catch the sunset.)
Driving from Cleveland/West: Take Rt. 90
East (pass Austinburg exit) to next exit, Rt. 11 North, go to the end of 11. (If
you need food along the way, the Rt.20/Ashtabula Mall exit off Rt.11 has an
Aldi's (east/right) & array of restaurants & cheaper gas.) At the end of
Rt. 11, turn west (left, away from Lakeshore Park) and follow the 2-lane road
that will go through a neighborhood of homes then through the lift bridge in the
Harbor. (It lifts on the 1/2 hour if boats are waiting.) Go straight on Bridge
St., one block, turn at first right, (cobblestone up a steep hill-Hulbert's on
the corner.) Turn right at the top of the hill (Walnut). Marine Museum on the
left. It will take awhile to grill, set up, etc. If late arrivers bring
desserts, that might work well!
If you haven't RSVP'ed, please let me
know if you'll be joining us for the picnic, tour and photo shoot-don't forget
to include the number of family members and guests coming, and what you'll be
bringing.
Thank you. Cathie Schmidt 440-466-6414
Hi everyone,
This is a long list and has lots of important information about a
variety of activities. You may want to print this and keep for reference.
Bill Lewis is always willing (well almost
always) to lead people into the Ashtabula gulf. Contact him to set up a time.
If YOU would like to share one of your
spots, just send out and email asking if anyone is interested. You will probably
get some takers.
Anyone who would like to learn how to mat their
photos should contact me, Pat Stoltz, and we can set up a time. Plan on at
least 2 hours to mount and mat your photo. Nominal charge for supplies.

October is set for the
Exhibition at
The
Ashtabula Arts Center.
Details to follow.
